TSC Unveils Comprehensive Medical Cover for All Teachers Starting December 2025
In a significant move towards implementing the National Policy on Universal Health Care, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced a comprehensive medical coverage scheme for all teachers and their dependents, effective December 1st, 2025.
Historic Healthcare Initiative
The TSC has contracted the Social Health Authority (SHA) through the Public Officers Medical Scheme Fund (POMSF) to provide medical coverage for all teachers in their employment, together with their dependents. This landmark initiative, detailed in TSC Circular No. 29/2025, represents one of the most comprehensive healthcare packages ever offered to Kenya’s teaching workforce.
Who Qualifies?
The eligibility criteria are straightforward and inclusive:
Principal Members:
- All teachers in active service aged 18 to 65 years automatically qualify
- One legal spouse of the teacher is covered
Dependents: The scheme covers up to five dependents per teacher, including:
- Biological or legally adopted children
- Coverage from birth until age 18
- Extended coverage to age 25 for children residing with parents and enrolled in recognized post-secondary institutions
- Unlimited age coverage for child dependents with proven disability status
Maximum Family Size: Six members (the principal member plus five dependents)
What Makes This Different?
Unlike previous schemes, this comprehensive package operates on a “fee for service” basis, with benefit limits graduated according to the teacher’s job group. The cover includes everything from routine outpatient consultations to complex procedures like cancer treatment, overseas medical referrals, and even emergency air evacuations.
Commission Secretary/CEO E. J. Mitei emphasized that this initiative represents a significant step toward ensuring teachers and their families have access to quality healthcare without financial strain.
