Tragedy Strikes KJSEA Marking Exercise as Examiner Dies at Machakos Girls High School

Nairobi, Kenya – November 24, 2025

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has announced the death of one of its examiners during the ongoing Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) marking exercise.

The Incident

Mr. Nicodemus Mutua Mutuku passed away this morning at Machakos Girls High School, where he was serving as a team leader for the Creative Arts and Sports paper marking. The tragic incident occurred during the KJSEA marking session, which began on November 7, 2025.

About the Deceased

According to KNEC Chief Executive Officer Dr. David Njengere, Mr. Mutuku was a dedicated educator from Nduluni Junior School in Makindu Sub-County, Makueni County. He had been actively and diligently performing his duties as a team leader since the commencement of the marking exercise.

Mr. Mutuku’s career with KNEC spanned many years. Before the transition to Competency Based Education (CBE), he served as an examiner for the now-defunct Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination, demonstrating his long-standing commitment to Kenya’s education sector.

Official Statement

In a press statement released on Monday, November 24, 2025, Dr. Njengere described the loss as profound, noting that Mr. Mutuku was “an experienced, diligent teacher” and referred to him as “a gem” to the education community.

“It is with profound sadness that I share the news of the passing of one of our examiners,” Dr. Njengere stated in the official release.

KNEC has extended its deepest sympathies and condolences to Mr. Mutuku’s family, friends, loved ones, and fellow examiners during this difficult time.
